I’m happy  that Twitter is actually helpful for a change, playing a strong role in the demonstrations.

I’m happy that although many of the protesters don’t even support Mousavi, they still joined his supporters to take a stand against Ahmadinejad and a rigged system.

I’m happy that many of the world’s journalists  are sacking up and taking a stand on the matter.  The  mainstream media still needs to follow suit, however, because they are still referring to what happened last week as an “election“. 

Finally, and most importantly, I’m happy for the existence of this young Iranian protester:

As a Columbus, Ohio native, I got teary-eyed when this photograph showed up on Facebook. I think Ohio State University should send a big box of football gear to these guys to protect them from the riot police. Can you imagine an angry Persian storming Ahmadinejad’s estate in a football football helmet and a throwback #45 jersey?  Insha’allah my Buckeye brethren,  ان شاء الله

I’m sad that these sort of things still happen in our world.

(CAIRO) One morning on academic travel in Egypt, our class of approximately 20 students went to visit the Mosque/Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, pictured on the left in the above photo. In many cases,  non-muslim tourists are required to buy a ticket to enter a mosque, but of course, muslims may enter free of charge. With a Pakistani Professor, a girl from Bahrain, and a Muslim boy from Gambia in our class, we only needed 18 tickets. However obvious,  it should be noted that Kebba, the boy from Gambia, is a very dark-skinned African. Apparently the color of his skin convinced the ignorant Egyptian working at the entrance of the mosque to believe that he was “no muslim”, he must pay. The gatekeeper was a douchebag. He was very rude to our professor, causing a great scene, and delaying our schedule. Midway through the dispute, the jerk changed his whole story to say that only Egyptian muslims could enter without a ticket, meaning that everyone in our party would have to pay. A dialogue began:

“Egyptian!”

“Muslim!”

“Egyptian!”

“Muslim!”

And so on… I felt awkward, disturbed, but mostly angry at this greasy, mustachioed dirtbag. Being a western-educated,  tech-savvy people, our professor told the students to snap photos of the transgressor, so that we may send it to his superiors at the Ministry of Antiquities in complaint. I happened to be sitting behind him for one of these photos, looking devious. I wanted to choke slam him. We were eventually permitted to enter the mosque, because we had his photo and his coworkers convinced him we were superior beings. The photo turned out so great, we decided to make a movie poster. I named the butthole “Abu Trika” after my favorite Egyptian footballer. Go Al-Ahly!
